Shark Kills A 16 Year Old Girl During Swim With Dolphins in Australia

A shark mauled a 16-year-old girl in a river in Perth, the state capital of Western Australia, on Saturday, resulting in her death.

The attack occurred in the Fremantle port area of Perth around 3:45 p.m. (07:45 GMT), according to police, near a Swan River traffic bridge.

In a statement, the police said that the girl was pulled from the water with serious injuries and died at the scene.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported on Sunday that the victim had jumped off a jet ski to swim with a pod of dolphins in the river when the shark attacked.

The ABC reported that authorities were unsure of the kind of shark that attacked the girl.

A 57-year-old man was killed by a great white shark at Perth's Port Beach in November 2021, making it the last shark attack that resulted in a fatality in Western Australian waters.

In January 2021, a man was swimming in the Swan River when he was severely bitten by a bull shark.

Western Australian waters are home to more than 100 species of shark, including bull sharks, which can be found many kilometers upriver.

The state government claims that there is a low risk of shark attacks in the state. To assist first responders in dealing with shark incidents, a dedicated shark response unit has been established.

After a swimmer was killed in a shark attack in February, the first such incident at the city's beaches in nearly 60 years, several beaches on the east coast of Sydney, including the iconic Bondi and Bronte, were closed.
