Video of a crash in Afghanistan in 2013 that was mistaken for a recent plane crash in Nepal

Claim: The crash of the Yeti Airlines plane on January 15 in Pokhara, Nepal, is shown in this video.

On January 15, a passenger plane crashed in Pokhara, Nepal, killing at least 68 people. The plane was carrying 72 passengers, including five Indians, according to reports. The last moments of the Yeti Airlines flight appear to have been captured by a cellphone recovered from the wreckage. When the plane suddenly explodes, the video shows passengers sitting inside. Passengers' terrified screams could be heard and a horrifying fire could be seen outside the window.

A plane crashes to the ground after plummeting from the sky in yet another disturbing social media video. "Another video of #NepalPlaneCrash" was written by those who shared the video on Twitter. That post's archived version can be found here.

The investigation found that the video was old. In May 2013, a Boeing 747 US cargo plane crashed in Bagram, Afghanistan. This video shows that.

A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to the American news network CNN’s YouTube channel. The video was uploaded to the channel on May 2, 2013. The video was titled, “How the 747 crashed in Afghanistan.”

Subsequent searches led us to a May 2013 news report in The Guardian that contained the same video. The footage reportedly showed the moment a Boeing 747 US cargo plane crashed on its ascent from the Bagram airbase in Afghanistan. The crash resulted in the death of all seven American crew members on board.

The same was reported by the BBC as well as by CNN around the same time.

Back in 2017, this video went viral when a Boeing 737 MAX 8 Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed near Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. At the time, AFP Fact Check, among other news outlets, debunked the video.

Thus, it is very clear that the video has no link to the recent Nepal plane crash.

Fact: The Nepal plane crash is not shown in the video. A Boeing 747 US cargo plane went down in Bagram, Afghanistan, in May 2013. That's shown in this video.
