Indian Scientist Warns Major Earthquakes Likely To Hit Himachal, Uttarakhand

According to a renowned meteorologist and geologist, the Indian tectonic plate moves about 5 cm annually, causing stress to build up along the Himalayas and increasing the likelihood of major earthquakes in the coming days.

"The Earth's surface comprises various plates that are constantly in motion," said Dr. N Purnachandra Rao, chief scientist and seismologist at the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) in Hyderabad, in an interview with ANI on Tuesday. Each year, the Indian plate moves about 5 cm, adding stress to the Himalayas and increasing the likelihood of major earthquakes."

"In Uttarakhand, we have a robust network of 18 seismograph stations. The chief scientist continued, "The region known as the seismic gap between Himachal and the western part of Nepal, including Uttarakhand, is prone to earthquakes that could occur at any time."

According to the National Centre for Seismology, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck 56 kilometers north of Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, at 10.38 p.m. on Monday.

According to the agency, the epicentre was ten kilometers below the surface of the earth.

"A magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck 56 kilometers north of Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, yesterday at approximately 10:38 p.m. "The earthquake occurred 10 kilometers below the surface," the NCS stated in a statement.

The town of Nandigama in the NTR district of Andhra Pradesh was struck by an earthquake on February 19. The incident did not result in any deaths.
