Fact Check: After his daughter name was in liquor scam, KCR claimed he is PM Modi's best friend

Claim: Viral video shows KCR praising PM Modi after her daughter's name came in Delhi excise policy scam.

After his daughter was investigated by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the scam involving the Delhi excise policy, did Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao offer praise to Prime Minister Narendra Modi? KCR, the supremo of the Baharat Rashtra Samithi, says in a 30-second video that has been shared on social media that he was PM Modi's "best friend." This video was shared on Twitter by Priti Gandhi of the Bharatiya Janata Party, among other things.

“After his daughter has been named in the Delhi liquor excise scam, KCR is suddenly singing like a canary!!,” read Gandhi’s tweet. The archived versions of similar posts can be seen herehere and here.

In a remand report, the ED mentioned KCR's daughter K Kavitha, an MLC and former MP, in relation to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. The ED claims that Kavitha and two others paid the Aam Aadmi Party Rs 100 crore in order to take advantage of the benefits of the Delhi excise policy, which has since been scrapped. On December 11, she was questioned by a six-member Central Bureau of Investigation team.

We discovered that this KCR video is more than four years old, so it has nothing to do with the alleged involvement of Kavitha in the scam.

Using relevant keywords, we discovered the identical video of the Telangana Chief Minister that was posted to a YouTube channel on March 4, 2018. "I have nothing against Narendra Modi and have respect for him I am his best friend" was KCR's response to a journalist's question in the video, whose audio was unclear. He went on to say that he only opposes "the country's slow progress." This established the video's age.

On the same date, multiple media organisations also reported on KCR’s remark. According to the Times of India, KCR made this statement at a presser, days after his alleged remarks against the PM at a public meeting in Telangana’s Karimnagar and Adilabad.

Meanwhile, multiple times over the years, the BRS supremo has praised Modi and and called him his “friend”. The CM has also come down on Modi on several occasions. KCR recently had accused the PM of threatening to topple his government in Telangana.

KCR has, so far, not made any public statement about Kavitha’s alleged involvement in the Delhi liquor policy scam. Reportedly, Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on December 12 had questioned KCR’s continued silence on the matter.

Fact: This 2018 video has nothing to do with the CBI's questioning of his daughter. KCR has frequently made remarks about Modi that are similar over the years.
