Thunderbolt strikes NYC’s World Trade Center caught on camera

A stunning video showing a thunderbolt striking the sky-high One World Trade Center building in New York is going viral. The video was taken on Saturday night when a strong thunderstorm hit the US city.

Popular New York-based photographer named Max Guliani (@maximusupinNYc) shared a now-viral video that captures the powerful lightning bolt as it hit the 546-metre-tall building. While tweeting this video, Guliani wrote, “Tonight’s lightning storm over One World Trade #NYC”.

This video got over 13,000 likes and over 1.7 million views. Commenting on it, a Twitter user wrote, “This is absolutely incredible”. Another person wrote, “C’mon….That’s just…incredible!”.

Many others also shared pictures and videos of the thunderstorm.

The lightning rods attached to all major skyscrapers protect buildings against lightning strikes by channelling volts of energy directly to the ground instead of allowing it to surge through the building via pipes or wires.

In April 2021, a video had gone viral that showed a pine tree getting stuck by lightning and catching fire before plummeting to the ground at Wautoma High School in Wisconsin. Before that in 2020, a local news station WUSA9’s sky camera captured an incredible video of lightning striking the Washington Monument during a thunderstorm.
