The 100-foot Jesus Christ statue that towered over Rio de Janeiro was struck by lightning in a jaw-dropping moment. The stunning scene was taken during a brief storm that struck Brazil's coast on Friday. The statue's head was struck by the flash, and the sculpture became a godlike figure.
Fernando Braga took photographs of the stunning scene and posted them to Instagram. MAGICAL LIGHTNING! This Friday! In the post's caption, Mr. Braga stated, "Recordings taken on February 10, 2023 at 6:55 PM (Christ) and 19:03 PM (Antenna) using NIKON D800 with 70-200mm f/2.8E at 70mm f/8 13" ISO 100."
The mind-boggling images have been widely shared on social media. They have received over 20 million views on Twitter and received over 63,000 likes on Instagram.
A twitter user wrote, “Lightning struck Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro on February 10, 2023.”
Notably, on top of Corcovado Hill in Rio, the Christ the Redeemer statue is the largest representation of Jesus anywhere in the world. 700 tons of reinforced concrete make up the statue, which was named one of the seven new wonders of the world in 2007.
Additionally, lightning has struck the sculpture in the past. The iconic figure's thumb was damaged by lightning in 2014, according to the BBC, and has since undergone restoration work.
