According to a report from the National Center for Seismology, the epicentre of the earthquake was located in the Nagaon district on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River at 4:18 p.m.
It also stated that the quake was 10 kilometers deep.Near Hojai in central Assam, approximately 160 kilometers east of Guwahati, was the epicenter.
In addition to those in Sonitpur on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra river, those in the neighboring districts of West Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, and Morigaon felt the tremor as well.
The northeastern states are located in the high seismic zone, which means that the area experiences frequent earthquakes. Turkish authorities attempted to maintain order throughout the disaster zone and initiated legal action over building collapses on Sunday, nearly a week after one of the worst earthquakes to hit Turkey and Syria. Meanwhile, rescue workers pulled more survivors from the rubble on Sunday.
The death toll from Monday's earthquake and major aftershocks in both countries surpassed 33,000 and appeared to be set to continue rising as the odds of finding additional survivors increased. It was Turkey's deadliest earthquake since 1939.
