Six Russian balloons shot down over Kyiv

On Wednesday, the military administration of Ukraine stated that it shot down six Russian balloons that were observed above Kiev. The administration said that the balloons might have been carrying equipment for reconnaissance and corner reflectors.

Despite the fact that air alerts were issued in Kyiv on Wednesday, it was not immediately clear whether the balloons passed over the capital.

On the Telegram messaging app, the military administration wrote, "According to information that is now being clarified, these were balloons that move in the air under the propulsion of wind."

"The balloons may have been launched with the intention of detecting and exhausting our air defenses,"

Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian air force, made the following statement shortly before the announcement: "Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February of last year, may be using balloons in a new drive to preserve its stocks of reconnaissance drones."

"Russia is now using reconnaissance drones like the Orlan-10 less frequently, so they thought, "Why don't we use these balloons?" As a result, they are utilizing them," Ihnat stated to Ukrainian television.

He confirmed that balloons flying overhead on Wednesday had sounded air raid sirens in the capital.

Ihnat concurred with the military administration's suggestion that the balloons might be used by Russia to obstruct the air defenses of Ukraine.

"The enemy wants us to use these balloons for free with our air defenses, which protect our strategic objects."
