Women's Premier League set to begin on March 4

The inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL) will be held from March 4 to 26 in Mumbai.

After five franchises, three of which have teams in the Indian Premier League, won the bid to own a team in the WPL tournament, the much-anticipated league will begin with five teams.

Dhumal also confirmed that Mumbai will host the Women's Premier League auction on February 13.

On Twitter, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced the five-team tournament's combined bid value of INR 4669.99 Cr. The following five businesses won the bidding war: Pvt. Adani Sportsline Indiawin Sports Pvt. Ltd. Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited JSW GMR Cricket Pvt. Ltd. Capri Global Holdings Pvt. Ltd. Ltd. The IPL is played by Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and the other five teams. Additionally, the BCCI Secretary stated that the number of bids for the Women's Premier League exceeded the 2008 inaugural IPL record.

The BCCI had previously sold the media rights to the WPL seasons 2023-2027 for a total of INR 951 crores, or INR 7.09 crores per match. The Women's Premier League title sponsorship rights for the 2023–2027 seasons were up for grabs last month when the BCCI invited bids.

The Women's Twenty20 World Cup 2023 will begin in South Africa prior to the Women's Premier League. The auction has developed into the "elephant in the room," according to several female cricketers.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine made the following statement on Captains' Day: The auction is truly one-of-a-kind. It is massive. You talk about glass ceilings, and I think that the next step will be the WPL. It has really excited me. This is something we have never experienced as female cricket players. It will be awkward across the board. That is the term we have discussed.

Devine went on to say that it's not the nicest thing to put a value on a name, but women cricketers have done it for a reason.

"Some people will be taken into custody; "Some won't," Devine stated. Additionally, you will have a value placed on what you are worth, which, to be honest, is not the most pleasant thing for humans. However, it is also a job, and we have signed up for it."

Meg Lanning, captain of Australia, stated: We've never done an auction before, but we're concentrating on what we're trying to accomplish here, which is the most important thing. There is no right or wrong way to do that, and each person will approach it in their own way. I think it's important to always work as a team, but it's also important to let people handle things how they want to."
