11 Foot Alligator Kills 85 Year Old Florida Woman

According to NBC, an alligator attacked an 85-year-old Florida woman while she was walking her dog. The attack occurred while the woman was walking her dog near a pond at a retirement community.

CNN reports that the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded to a 911 call about an apparent alligator bite in St. Lucie, Florida.

CNN was informed by a spokesperson for the FWC, Arielle Callender, that the woman and her dog were present at the time of the incident. The dog was able to escape, but its condition is currently unknown.

An alligator lunged out and grabbed the dog as the woman was walking it, according to media reports. The woman attempted to save the dog, but she was killed in the process. Ken Mascara, the sheriff of St. Lucie County, told WPTV that he thought the alligator was about 11 feet long.

A contracted nuisance alligator trapper was hired to capture the alligator and recover the woman's body.

The FWC released a statement that stated, "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim's family and friends."

According to the statement, "The FWC places the highest priority on public safety and administers a Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) to address complaints regarding specific alligators believed to pose a threat to people, pets, or property."
