Tamil Nadu Governor walks out of Assembly after standoff with DMK govt over his speech

On Monday morning, chief minister MK Stalin moved a resolution stating that only the government's customary speech would be recorded for the first day of the House's winter session. Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi then left the Assembly.

After Governor RN Ravi skipped portions of the customary address that had been prepared by the government, the ongoing conflict between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu and the governor grew inside the assembly on Monday.

After the governor skipped a few words including, ‘Dravidian model of governance’, MK Stalin interrupted RN Ravi’s speech and expressed regret that the Governor had avoided certain portions of the prepared address.

After the resolution that was proposed by the chief minister was approved, RN Ravi immediately left the House. In the Assembly's history, this may be the first time something like this has occurred.

Legislators chanted "Tamil Nadu Vazhgave" (Long live Tamil Nadu) and "Engal Nadu Tamil Nadu" (Our land is Tamil Nadu) as Ravi began his address in Tamil to welcome the New Year and the harvest festival "Pongal."

Governor Ravi and the TN government have disagreed on a number of issues, including his refusal to approve 20 bills. Ravi has been accused by the DMK and its allies of spreading the Hindutva ideology of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In addition, the DMK demanded Ravi's resignation on Sunday if he decided to continue on this path, accusing him of unnecessary interference in state politics.
