Germany sends 18 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine

According to the German defense ministry, Ukraine has received the first shipment of Leopard 2 tanks from Germany. After Ukrainian crews received instruction on how to operate the cutting-edge main battle tanks, they received their delivery.

Boris Pistorius, the minister of defense, stated that he was confident that the tanks could "make a decisive contribution" on the war's front lines. According to reports from Ukraine, Challenger 2 tanks from the United Kingdom have also arrived.

Since Russia's invasion, Ukraine has been calling for more cutting-edge vehicles and weaponry. The Ukrainian government hasn't said anything about the Leopard 2s yet, but they have said that the first Challenger 2 tanks made in the UK are coming.

European nations use approximately 2,000 Leopard 2s, widely regarded as one of the best main battle tanks produced by NATO nations. After initially being reluctant to do so or even to permit other nations to send their own tanks, Germany agreed in January to provide the tanks to Ukraine.

Under German regulation, Berlin should endorse Panther 2s being re-traded by any country. The tanks "have made it into the hands of our Ukrainian friends as promised and on time," according to Boris Pistorius, the German defense minister.

Over the past few weeks, the German army has taught Ukrainian tank crews how to use the advanced Leopard 2 A6 variant. They were made to compete with the Russian T-90 main battle tank, which is thought to use less fuel and is easier to maintain than most Western tanks.

Germany has also provided Ukraine with 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles and two specialized tank-recovery vehicles in addition to the Leopard 2s. Iryna Zolotar, a spokesperson for the defense ministry, informed the AFP news agency that British Challenger 2 tanks "are already in Ukraine."

Oleksii Reznikov, the minister in charge of defense, referred to the British vehicle as a "work of military art" in a picture that he shared on his Facebook page alongside other Western-made military vehicles. The UK Ministry of Defence declined to comment, but it had previously confirmed that Ukrainian tank crews who had completed their training in Britain with the tanks had returned home.
