Fact Check: Attack on North Indian workers in Tami Nadu’s Tiruppur

Claim: Video shows an attack on North Indian workers in Tami Nadu’s Tiruppur.

A video containing a series of clips is being shared on social media. In the first clip of the series of three, a man can be seen attacked by a person with a machete. In the second one, a man is seen drenched in blood. In the third video clip, a woman can be seen saying Hindi people should leave their land as Tamils need jobs. The incident in the video clip claimed to be from Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur happened on 22 February 2023. Let’s fact-check this claim through this article.

The fact that the video depicts an incident in Coimbatore was pointed out in some of the Facebook comments accompanying the viral video. Taking this as a cue, we conducted a keyword search on Google, which brought us to a few news articles containing the viral video's first video clip.

According to the Times of India, "two men were brutally attacked in broad daylight in Coimbatore with machetes." A gang of five people attacked the victims. One of the victims passed away right away, and the other suffered serious injuries during the incident. You can find news articles about this incident here and here. This is misquoted in the viral post to imply that it took place in Tiruppur.

We were unable to identify the specifics of the second lip, in which a man is seen lying on the road, bleeding, receiving assistance from two men. The final clip comes from a Jaya Plus news report. This report says that women workers in Tiruppur staged a sit-in protest during the fight between some locals and North Indian workers. Even though we were unable to obtain any additional information regarding the second clip of the viral post, the remaining evidence makes it abundantly clear that the post made use of a number of unrelated videos to link them to the Tiruppur incident and claim that these videos were taken in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, on February 22, 2023.

In conclusion, a video of a gang fight in Coimbatore is circulated as an attack on North Indian workers in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu.

Fact: Although there have been reports of attacks on North Indians in Tiruppur, the clip in the beginning of the viral post in which a man is seen attacking another person with a machete has no connection with the Tiruppur incident. The clips shows a fight that erupted between two gangs in Coimbatore in February 2023. Hence the claim made in the post is Misleading.
