An explosion ripped through a building in a crowded area of Bangladesh’s capital on Tuesday, killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 50 others, according to authorities in the South Asian country.
The additional commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Mahid Uddin Khondekar, stated that the explosion's cause was unknown, but it could have been caused by a gas explosion.
He added, "We are not sure, but it seems accidental," noting that the extent of the damage and the number of casualties would become more apparent once firefighters and rescue workers had finished their work.
According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the building's location on a busy road near a market meant that pedestrians were affected, even though there were not many people inside at the time of the blast.
Firefighters and other emergency responders can be seen in photos carrying out search and rescue activities at night. Walls are missing and crumbling from the damaged structure; There appears to be complete collapse of some units, and debris covers the ground outside. Outside, relatives of the victims can be seen mourning.
Dinomoni Sharma, an official with the fire department, said that 22 people were still in the hospital as of Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday, Sharma stated, the Bangladeshi army would work to secure the building's remains and conduct an investigation into the blast's cause.
Two other fatal explosions occurred in the country this past weekend; In Dhaka, a densely populated megacity that is home to more than 23 million people, a suspected gas explosion resulted in the deaths of three people on Sunday.
After an explosion at an oxygen plant in the southeast of Bangladesh on Saturday, a fire broke out, killing seven people and injuring several others.
