After being out of the Indian team for three months, Jasprit Bumrah has been added to the ODI squad for the three-match series against Sri Lanka.
A stress reaction in Bumrah's back has kept him out of action since September of last year, and since then, he has been working on his rehabilitation at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. ESPNcricinfo is aware that his recovery has been deemed satisfactory by the national selectors.
It is believed that he has increased the intensity of his training and bowling over the past week, which led to his selection to the squad. In a statement, the BCCI stated, "The pacer has undergone rehabilitation and has been declared fit by the NCA." Soon, he will join the ODI team for Team India."
ESPNcricinfo had reported that Bumrah was fit when India's squads for the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka were announced on December 27. However, the selectors were cautious about rushing him back because his back injury had resurfaced during the home T20Is against Australia last year. Bumrah was then disqualified from India's participation in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, where England defeated India in the semi-finals.
Bumrah's recovery and recuperation report is accepted to have been examined at the BCCI's exhibition survey meeting on Monday, prompting an adjustment of position with respect to choice. Apparently, the management of the team wants Bumrah to get back into full rhythm before the four-match series against Australia in February.
His return coincides with India's preparations for the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will take place in India in October and November. Depending on the outcome of the home Test series against Australia, India may also host the World Test Championship final in June, shortly after the Indian Premier League.
With Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Umran Malik, in addition to seam-bowling allrounder Hardik Pandya, all in the mix, India now has a nearly full-strength pace attack for the series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah's inclusion in the ODI squad means that India will have a seam-bowling allrounder.
After the three Twenty20 International matches on January 3, India will play three ODIs against Sri Lanka on January 10, 12, and 15.
India's squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (vice-capt), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.
