In an ODI, it's not often that a double century knock is followed by another, as happened today in Hyderabad. India scored a massive 349 on a difficult surface thanks to Shubman Gill's 208, and no other batsman reached 35 in the innings. Michael Bracewell (140) and Mitchell Santner (57) staged a barely believable comeback and almost pulled off a coup before falling agonizingly short by 12 runs. The match appeared to be over when the visitors were reduced to 131/6.
New Records from the first ODI in Hyderabad:
1 Gill became the first player in ODIs against New Zealand to score a double hundred. He beat Sachin Tendulkar's 1999 unbeaten score of 186 at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in the same city, which was the previous highest score for an individual against New Zealand.

Gill became the youngest player to ever score a double hundred in an ODI at the age of 23 and 132 days. When he scored 210 against Bangladesh in Chattogram last month, he beat teammate Ishan Kishan, who was 24 years old and 145 days old.
Gill's 19 innings to score 1000 ODI runs rank second in the format behind Imam-ul-Haq as the fastest batter. The fastest is still Fakhar Zaman, who reached the mark in one fewer inning than the previous fastest Indian player, Shikhar Dhawan, who played 24 innings.
Fewest innings to 1000 ODI runs:
Player | Inngs taken | Days from debut | Date |
---|---|---|---|
Fakhar Zaman | 18 | 410 | 22-Jul-18 |
Imam-ul-Haq | 19 | 464 | 25-Jan-19 |

174 The third-largest margin in an innings is the difference of 174 runs between Gill (208) and the next highest scorer, Rohit Sharma (34). The difference was 198 runs when Rohit Sharma scored 264, and Virat Kohli's score of 66 against Sri Lanka in Kolkata in 2014 was the next highest.
2 After MS Dhoni, Bracewell became the second batter in ODI cricket history to score multiple hundreds while batting at #7 or lower. After scoring an unbeaten 127 off just 82 balls in a chase of 301 against Ireland in Dublin in July, this was his second three-figure score in the format. His 140 is the joint third-highest individual score for a player playing ODIs at a batting average of seven or less.
Bracewell's 57 balls are the third-fastest for New Zealand in an ODI century, behind Corey Anderson's 36 balls and Jesse Ryder's 46 balls, both of whom made the feat against the West Indies on New Year's Day 2014 in Queenstown. Only Shahid Afridi has scored a hundred against India in fewer deliveries than Shahid Afridi did in Kanpur in 2005 with 45 balls.
The 162-run partnership that Bracewell and Santner put together is the third-highest stand for a seventh wicket or less in ODI cricket and the highest New Zealand stand ever, surpassing the 123 runs that Jacob Oram and Neil Broom put together against Bangladesh in Napier in 2010 for New Zealand. It also surpassed Mahmudullah and Mehidy Hasan's 148 in Mirpur last month, which was the highest against India.
Highest partnership for 7th wicket or lower in ODIs:
