Fact check: NASA stops explore ocean in 1978

Claim: In 1978, NASA stopped exploring the ocean.

A YouTube video is being circulated by some social media users claiming that NASA halted ocean exploration efforts in 1978.

The video shows calm scenes of manta rays, fish, and sharks swimming. According to the narrator, NASA began exploring the "deep sea" in 1958 before abruptly ceasing in June 1978. According to the video, NASA then got to work on "getting us off the planet."

The narrator inquires, "Have you ever wondered why NASA stopped exploring the ocean?" What were they able to discover there?"

According to Crowdtangle, a social media metrics tool, a link to the video was shared more than 125 times after it was posted on Facebook on August 31.

In a week, nearly 50,000 people liked a version on Instagram, but it has since been removed.

The video makes a false claim. The deep sea and the ocean as a whole are still being studied by NASA.

Continuation of NASA ocean research According to NASA spokesperson Peter Jacobs, the organization has been conducting research in ocean science ever since its founding.

He stated in an email, "That includes field campaigns, remote sensing satellite observations, and modeling studies." NASA has continued to be involved in this research, particularly with ship- and sensor-based exploration of the ocean's depths below the surface.

The SUBSEA project, which involves sending robotic missions into the deep sea, is also described in detail on the NASA website.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other organizations are working together on this project. The objective is to not only collect information about specific environments in the deep sea but also to simulate the use of similar robotic technology on other planets.

Another reason why NASA explores the ocean is mentioned on the website.

"Developing an understanding of the entire Earth system and the effects of natural and human-induced changes on the global environment is one part of NASA's mission. According to the agency's website, "our oceans play a major role in influencing changes in the global climate and weather." New and exciting ways of understanding the ocean can be achieved through the analysis of remotely sensed ocean data."

Although the video claims that NASA stopped exploring the oceans in June 1978, Seasat, the agency's first oceanographic satellite, was launched at that time.

Despite the fact that the satellite went down in October of that year, NASA has continued to study the oceans from space ever since.

NASA states on its website, "Currently there are several ocean-observing satellite missions and an extensive scientific research community studying these data." Each mission adds to our understanding of the ocean in its own unique way."

Conclusion: False According to our research, the assertion that NASA stopped exploring the ocean in 1978 is FALSE. Satellite and deep sea robotic missions are included in the agency's current ocean research.
