Following a rumored shooting, a brief lockdown was instituted at the Mall of America. On its Twitter account, the Mall of America confirmed the lockdown and asked customers to remain in "the closest secure location." Friday night, shoppers at the Mall of America were frightened by gunshots, which forced the mall into lockdown for about an hour. The Bloomington Police Division answered the shooting in no time before 8 p.m., the shopping center said in a proclamation.
Police said they are searching for the suspect after securing the scene, AP reported.
Video posted on social media showed what appeared to be a man shouting as he walked near the complex’s Nike store, with at least three apparent gunshots.
Bloomington Police say that officers and emergency medical personnel arrived at the mall where the "reported shooting" occurred. The occurrence comes when shopping centers and retail plazas across the US see a colossal surge of travelers before Christmas.
After the lockdown was lifted by the Mall of America, guests were asked to leave the property.
"Mall of America is now lifting lockdown. Guests should now exit the property. Mall of America remains closed for the evening. Please stay tuned for an additional statement," the Mall of America wrote on Twitter.
The Mall of America boycotts firearms on its premises, as indicated by its site. Metal detectors are not present at the mall, and customers are not searched upon entry.
In August, a reported shooting at the suburban Minneapolis shopping center sent some shoppers fleeing for cover, and two people were injured in an apparent altercation on New Year's Eve.
